Hi Friends, Here is two of the paintings I am donating towards the Bougainville fundraiser – Siwai/Buin Baskets. The technique I have used is to mimick the fine weaving of the original Siwai/Buin Basket – fine strands of paint interwoven. It is in these two southern areas of Bougainville that this form of traditional weaving originated. These days You may see different progressions of this type of weaving being created in other parts of PNG – however none are as finely crafted as the original Siwa/Buin basket because of its specially fine weave and fibre. I pray it isnt a dying craft amongst Siwai and Buin People. I have created these from still life of my mothers own collection woven by my Uncles from Konga – Siwai Region in the 70’s.
